Physical Education
Our intent for Physical Education (PE) is to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy living among all children. We aim to develop not only physical competence but also children’s confidence, social skills, and emotional wellbeing through a diverse and enjoyable curriculum.
Intent
Our PE programme is aligned with the National Curriculum and designed to cater to the varying interests and abilities of our children, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
We prioritise the following objectives:
-
Developing the whole child: We aim to promote physical, social, emotional development through PE, enabling children to build skills they can use in all areas of their life.
-
Inclusivity: Our PE curriculum is inclusive of all abilities, encouraging participation, and providing tailored opportunities for every child to experience success and enjoyment in physical activities. Elements of our prevision are themed:
- For All (These events are for everyone and are delivered in school),
- Targeted (These events target specific groups of young people who would benefit the most from having positive experiences of sport, physical activity and competition)
– Competitive (who are ready and prepared for competition and enjoy performing and competing against others). These themes have been designed to ensure we provide events to benefit all young people.
-
Health and Wellbeing: We stress the importance and benefits of physical health and mental wellbeing.
Implementation
We employ a comprehensive and engaging approach to implement our PE curriculum, following county guidelines:
• Curriculum Structure: Our curriculum includes a wide range of activities: team sports, individual pursuits, and creative movement. We ensure that lessons are progressive, building on skills from year to year while also providing enrichment opportunities through after-school clubs and inter-school competitions.
• Skilled Instruction: We incorporate guest coaches and community partnerships to enhance our curriculum and expose children to a variety of sports.
• Assessment and Feedback: We have established clear assessment criteria that align with the National Curriculum and provide regular feedback to children. Self-assessment and peer assessment strategies are employed to encourage reflection and personal goal setting.
• Active Learning Environment: We develop an environment where children feel safe and supported to take risks and challenge themselves. PE lessons offer children to practise specific skills and develop their team working skills.
• Before and after school provision we provide opportunities for children to further their experience of physical activity.
• Community Engagement: We invite in inspirational speakers from the world of sport and actively involve parents and the wider community in our PE programme, encouraging family participation in events and partnerships with local sports clubs to extend learning outside of school. We provide opportunities for all children to represent the school during their time at Steeple Morden Primary.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is evident through:
-
Participation Rates: There is a high level of participation in PE lessons, after-school clubs, and inter-school competitions
-
Positive Attitudes Towards PE: Our surveys show that the vast majority of children enjoy PE lessons, and many express a desire to continue pursuing sports and physical activity outside of school.
-
Personal Development: Our focus on teamwork and cooperation within lessons develops strong social bonds among children, enhancing their skills in communication, resilience, and leadership.
